Look, I’m about to give you some student loan advice that your Mom and Dad didn’t give ya. You think all those things are great? Yeah, well they are if you can afford to do them. If you were born with a Silver Spoon in your mouth, stop reading because this article isn’t for you Dude. It’s for all those students out there who think college will be a blast and money will fall from the trees to pay for it!
First off, depending upon what type of financial aid you have, you may find yourself working weekends while your friends hoop it up at the Keg party. You see, if you get the wrong type of student loan, it may or may not cover your living expenses. Pell grants are good options for students who are in the low to middle class and w
ho’s parents don’t make a lot of money. Pell grants cover non-tuition expenses that other traditional student loans do not. Plus, the Prez’s stimulus bills have increased the amounts of Pell grants while decreasing some of the requirements.
Scholarships are great. They do not have to be paid back either, just like Pell grants. However, obtaining a scholarship may be a lot more difficult that getting a Pell grant. If you’re an under achiever, then it’s likely that an Academic scholarship is out of the question. Slackers need not apply. But you’d be surprised at how many scholarships go unused each year. Many just don’t have anyone applying for them. The trick is to find a counselor who’s knowledgeable in these types of scholarships and help you apply. Good luck finding a counselor like that. They’re just like a lot of people, they want to sit on their butts and do as little as possible and give out the same old, tiring student loan advice that everyone else is giving out. I bet they went to spring break while kids like you had to work!
