Today their are a lot of different options to getting out of debt, you could contact a debt counselor, consolidate your debt, get in touch with a debt negotiation company, or even file bankruptcy. However, their may be one option you may not have thought of.
The do it yourself debt settlement option is one of the easiest and cheapest options available. In this article I’m going to give you the ups and downs to setting up your own debt elimination plan.
The Up Side
Just as I mentioned before their are a few upsides to setting up your own credit card debt settlement plan like being very cost effective and easy to implement but their are a few other reasons why setting up your own debt plan is good.
- It keeps you in control. With all the other options I listed in the beginning of the article you won’t have nearly as much control with your financial situation as you will with doing it yourself.
- The tools are easy to setup a debt plan are very easy to use and run in most cases. There are also a ton of different web applications available to help you get started.
The Down Side
With all the great things about setting up your own debt elimination plan there are also some down sides that you should be aware of.
- No coaching or guidance. With most programs you will have someone guiding you through the process. With the do it yourself option it will be up to you to keep things going.
- Hard to get started. It’s also hard to get started when you have a lot of debt to deal with at first. This can be very discouraging at times when you’re just trying to get started and pay off that first debt.
- Finally, if you can’t stay in control of your situation you may end up repeating the cycle of constantly falling back into debt.

So is this option right for you? Of all the options I mentioned in this post I almost always suggest this one first to people and if you find it hard to do it yourself then you may want to consider one of the other options I mentioned in the beginning.
